A
Journey Called Love |
|
|
|
|
| |

|
The
film portrays the life and loves of writer and poet Sibilla (Rina) Aleramo,
from her adolescence to womanhood, focusing on the years when she met and
fell in love with poet Dino Campana. When she was merely a teenager, Rina’s
mother, distressed from her husbands continuous betrayals tried to commit
suicide, leaving Rina the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings.
Soon after, Rina marries a violent and cruel man, leaving her pregnant and
emotionally devastated. Rina decides to runs away to Florence where she
surrounds herself with intellectuals. She becomes involved in a series of
intense yet brief romantic affairs. Her high and absolute ideal of love
leads her to consider every one of her relationships important and meaningful,
and not just simple, casual affairs. The long series of relationships continues
until she meets a man whose work and personality seem to match her own.
The great poet Dino Campana is able to show Rina what the true journey of
love is all about. |

Sebastian,
a young Canadian writer living in Italy, begins to write a film about his
worst fears and phobias - solitude, unhappiness and love. As the story progresses,
his imaginary world begins to take on a reality of its own as passion, emotion
and movement are portrayed and represented by different characters. As he
struggles with the black and white realities of his life, his imagination
abounds with colours, characters and scenarios. As he learns about himself,
the unpredictability of life and love take over and his realization that
in order to succeed one must sometimes compromise. |

The
Best Day Of My Life |
|

|
| |
 |
Irene,
a mother of three grown children, regrets not being able to pass on the
“family” feeling she grew up with to her own children. Sara,
the eldest, has been living in complete emotional isolation ever since her
husband died. She spends the evenings waiting for her son Marco to come
home, in constant fear that something awful has happened to him. This is
until a mysterious man named Sandro appears, and shakes up Sara’s
uneventful life. Rita, Irene’s other daughter, seems to lead a more
fulfilled life, married to husband Carlo, with two daughters, Silvia and
Chiara. But behind the facade lies deep discontent, where she is no longer
able to have sexual relations with her husband, and instead is charmed by
a new man who has entered her life. Claudio, the youngest, is a lawyer who
is frustrated by the secrecy of his homosexuality, and is forced to choose
his path by a young man named Luca. The unhappiness and repressed desires
are inevitably weighing upon the siblings, whose parents are swept up by
an emotional earthquake. |

In Love |

Renowned
aesthetic surgeon Fabrizio Barbetti (De Sica) still harbours hatred towards
his ex wife Lisa (Ferilli), despite their divorce five years ago. They studiously
avoid one another. They will meet again at Christmas, with their new companions
Angela (D’Aquino) and Gabriele (Bocci), and they will be amazed...
Guido Baldi (Boldi) is a successful 50-year-old, with a beautiful wife and
a beloved daughter. In a midlife crisis, he meets a young model and embarks
on a risky extramarital relation. Meanwhile, his daughter has met and fallen
in lover with an older gentleman (De Vito). At Christmas time, the two couples
meet – and clash – in the same house...
Concetta (Barbera), a nice woman from a Southern Italian village, is a dedicated
fan of The Bold and the Beautiful. She never missed an episode in over 16
years. The best day in Concetta's life comes when she wins a “Christmas
with Ridge” competition: the prize is a weeklong vacation with her

 |
This
movie tells the story of two Italian mechanics who travel to the United
States, pursuing their own American dream.
Franco (De Sica) and Dino (Conticini) go to Las Vegas to take part in a
Harley-Davidson motorbike meeting, hoping to win a prize that would solve
many of their problems. However, bad luck seems to haunt them all along

will inspire them to give space to another great passion of theirs: music.
Franco and Dino meet an Italian immigrant italiano, budding showman Sammy
(Torkia), and together the three of them create the Clan, plunging straight

L’Oro
Di Napoli
(The Gold of Naples) |
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Vittorio
De Sica, Cesare Zavattini, and Giuseppe Marotta wrote this anthology of
tales depicting various aspects of Neapolitan life, with the emphasis of
poignancy and comedy: "The Racketeer" features Toto with a gangster
as his unwanted house guest; "Pizza On Credit" gave Sophia Loren
one of her first starring roles, as a wayward wife who loses her wedding
ring; "The Gambler" stars De Sica in a hilarious performance as
a compulsive gambler whose rich family won't give him money, so he's reduced
to playing cards with the young son of his servant; "Theresa"
features Silvana Mangano as a prostitute who discovers that a man really
does have to be crazy to marry her. (Two other episodes were cut for the
film's U.S. release.) |

Masaniello
(Love and Liberty) |
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
The
film narrates the story of Tommaso Aniello d'Amalfi, well known as Masaniello,
a Neapolitan fishmonger who led the riot against the harsh rule of the Duke
of Arcos, representative of King Philip IV of Spain, in the southern Italian
seaport of Naples in July 1647. "I began loving this character during
my years at the University" says Antonucci about this unwilling revolutionary
leader whose tragic end was brought about by his own followers. The film,
shot by the assignment of more than 3000 supernumeraries and with the use
of more than 800 historical costumes, took two years to be completed. It
chronicles the entire revolutionary event that involves the young Neapolitan
Masaniello and his passionate love for his wife Bernardina. The film underscores
the still very modern dreams of equality and social justice that, then as
now, stir oppressed people all over the world. |

Partigiano
Johnny |
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Partigiano
Johnny is set in 1943, when Italy succumbs to an armistice. The film’s
main protagonist Johnny is an English literature graduate, who returns to
his home town of Alba. Instead of being met with warmth and hospitality,
Johnny is viewed as a deserter and has no choice but to go into hiding.
Johnny is confused, and does not know whom he should side with in the fight
against the Nazi-Fascists. The charisma of his University Teachers, Chiodi
and Cocito, fascinates him, but his inner Anglo-lover heart, refuses to
follow them into the newly formed communist bands. Johnny blindly sides
with a group of partisans who are just as confused as he is, having no clear
ideology. The group, although led by a communist commander, are badly organized,
live in subhuman conditions, and succumb to cold and hunger more often than
to the enemy bullets. For Johnny, it is time to face up to the fact that
being a partisan has nothing to do with the epic and poetic adventure he’d
dreamed of in his literary reveries. |

Ulysses |
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Alex,
34, a quirky, funny man, befriends Jennifer, a 23-year-old woman. Through
jokes, music and humour, the two become close friends. However, Jennifer
comes from an abusive family, and this makes Alex wary about the possibility
of a romance. “Ulysses” conflates the tales of Ulysses and Telemachus:
the search for a homeland, the search for a father and the search for love.
Toronto is seen as a haven from misery, starvation, civil war, etc. Yet,
paradoxically, many Torontonians recreate their homeland by preserving their
traditions (building communities like “Little Italy,” “Chinatown,”
etc.) thus figuratively ‘returning’ to their homeland (like
Ulysses). |
